Almost 50% of German cars driving diesel fuel. EU plans to change the principles of taxation of fuel. If innovation take effect, diesel in the EU will be more expensive than gasoline. This could cause serious damage to highly developed market of diesel cars.
The plans of the European Commission to introduce a new system for calculating the minimum tax rates on fuel. This system provides a basis calculations take energy and CO2 emissions, rather than volume as now. Thus, the EU wants to encourage motorists to choose environmentally friendly fuel.
At present, the minimum tax on diesel in the EU is 33 cents per liter. By 2020, plans to increase its size to 41.2 cents. In Germany today rate is much higher – 47 cents.
If the tax on gasoline in Germany will remain the same, ie 65.4 cents, the tax on diesel by 2020 will increase by almost twice, and will be about 75 cents. Experts offer EC countries to maintain unchanged the diesel tax to reduce the tax on gasoline.
The Commission insists on its plans, despite criticism from Germany. Angela Merkel has said that these innovations are not supported. The European Parliament draft also sparked a barrage of criticism.
European governments have been accused of usurping the powers of national governments. In Brussels argue that it is only a definition of minimum, the right to establish the exact amount of tax saved by the Member States. True, they should be guided by common European criteria.
